Svende Braun Shares Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics

April 27, 2026

Svende BraunThe $3 million 2026 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics went to three teams of scientists working on the Muon g-2 experiment, including most recently a Fermilab team that includes Research Assistant Professor Svende Braun.

The experiment is searching for deviations from predictions of the Standard Model for particle physics for the magnetic properties of the muon, a fundamental particle that is a heavy, unstable relative of the electron.

Previous teams at CERN and the Brookhaven National Laboratory began these experiments before the Fermilab team refined the results, providing tantalizing hints that indicate new physics beyond the Standard Model. However, there remains considerable uncertainty at this point, so future experiments should prove very exciting.
