Grad Student Hijas Farook Wins ATLAS Center Fellowship
January 5, 2023
Graduate Student Hijas Farook has been awarded a fellowship from the ATLAS Center to conduct research in particle physics instrumentation and education at the Brookhaven National Laboratory for 6 months in 2023.
This research will contribute to the development of novel semiconductor tracking detectors proposed for future collider experiments, and it will seek to improve access to physics careers for members of historically under-represented groups.
Hijas is in his second year of the UNM PhD program and is already deeply involved in research using data from the Large Hadron Collider. He received his B.S. degree in Physics from the University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka. Hijas presented preliminary results from some of his research at the American Physical Society Four Corners Section meeting in October 2022.
Congratulations Hijas!
About the ATLAS Center
The ATLAS Center is a shared resource for physicists and students working on the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, designed to position ATLAS collaborators at U.S. institutions to make important measurements and discoveries with ATLAS data, and to advance future ATLAS detector technology.
About the ATLAS Experiment
ATLAS is a general-purpose particle physics experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. It is designed to exploit the full discovery potential of the LHC, pushing the frontiers of scientific knowledge. ATLAS' exploration uses precision measurement to push the frontiers of knowledge by seeking answers to fundamental questions such as: What are the basic building blocks of matter? What are the fundamental forces of nature? What is dark matter made of?
