Long Wavelength Array Receives Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP) Award
The radio astronomy group at UNM has just been awarded $530,000 to build another LWA station.
This will be the third complete LWA station, and the second in New Mexico.
This station will be combined with the first station (LWA1) to form high-resolution and high-sensitivity images of the sky at long wavelengths.
The funds for this station come from the highly-competitive Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP). The award for the LWA station is the only DURIP award in New Mexico this year, though other Physics and Astronomy faculty have won DURIPs in the past.
The new station will be located on the Sevilleta Wildlife Refuge, about 50 miles south of Albuquerque.
