CDF Data Analysis

As of 2014

Our CDF data analysis program (now concluded) involved:

  • The search for the Λb* resonance. This analysis, by Igor and Prabi, was published in Phys. Rev. D on 1 October 2013. This orbital excitation of a heavy quark system serves as a useful testing ground for heavy quark effective theory.
  • Prabi developed the infrastructure for producing a large archival set of Monte Carlo events for legacy B Physics analysis. His abstract about the results won a competition whose prize was the opportunity to present the work at the XSEDE 2013 Conference.

As of 2012

Igor, Prabhakar, and Sally pursue the program to study the spectroscopy of bottom baryon states decaying to the singlet state Lambda_b. The program originates from a Sigma_b(*) discovery (2007) where Igor and Sally are the principal authors. In 2010 Igor has measured the masses and, for the first time, the natural widths of all four Sigma_b(*)+- bottom baryon resonant states. Igor has presented the preliminary results on Sigma_b(*)+- at the ICHEP 2010, Paris. The preliminary results have also been described by Igor in a CDF Public Note 10286. The full account on the analysis can be found in a CDF Internal Note 10194 written by Igor. The final result on Sigma_b(*)+- has been submitted by Igor to Phys. Rev. D and has been published. The Particle Data Group has entered the Sigma_b(*)+- published results into "Summary Tables" of its recent, 2012 edition. Igor worked with Phys. Rev. D journal on the publication being a corresponding author on behalf of the CDF Collaboration. Based on the Sigma_b(*)+- analysis Igor's previous PhD student, Constantino Calancha (CIEMAT, Madrid), has successfully (summa cum laude) defended his Ph.D. Thesis in February 2011. Igor has served as a member of the Ph.D. Committee set for Constantino Calancha at CIEMAT, Madrid, Spain. Dr. Constantino Calancha is presently working on ILC project as a post-doc at KEK, Japan. In 2011 Igor has given an invited talk on behalf of CDF and D0 at a conference HADRON 2011, Muenchen, Germany. Prabhakar presented the Sigma_b(*)+- work in a talk at the Fall 2011 APS Four Corners Section meeting. Sally gave the combined CDF/D0 talk on "Heavy Flavor Baryon States at the Tevatron" at a conference NSTAR 2011, JLab, Virginia, USA

On 19 April 2012 Igor has presented at the internal CDF B physics meeting the analysis on excited Lambda_b* resonance search where the Lambda_b* signal reconstructed in its decay to Lambda_b pi+ pi- has been shown. On 15 June the Igor has presented the Lambda_b* signal in the talk given at CDF Collaboration Meeting, 14-15 June 2012, FNAL. The Lambda_b* result has been approved ("blessed") by CDF Collaboration on 28 June 2012. Igor has presented the observation of Lambda_b* signal at the ICHEP 2012, 4-11 July 2012, Melbourne, Australia. The preliminary results have also been described by Igor and Prabhakar in a CDF Public Note 10900. The full account on the analysis can be found in a CDF Internal Note 10867 written by Igor and Prabhakar. Prabhakar has reported on the Lambda_b* result in his plenary talk at BEACH 2012, 23-28 July 2012, Wichita, Kansas. The paper on the observation of Lambda_b* bottom resonance is now in collaboration review.

A related measurement initiated by CDF member Elena Vataga when she was a postdoc with our group was published this year: "Measurement of the branching fraction BR(Lambda_b0 -->Lambda_c+ pi- pi+ pi-) at CDF”. Igor and Sally served as internal CDF referees ("godparents") of this publication.
