Measurement of the B meson Lifetime with ATLAS and Development of Silicon Detectors for Future Colliders

Tuesday October 31, 2023
2:00 pm

 Presenter:  Easwar Anand Narayanan (UNM)
Series:  Nuclear, Particle, Astroparticle and Cosmology (NUPAC) Seminars
Abstract:  Measurements by the ATLAS detector involving CP-violation in B-mesons are likely to achieve record-breaking precision due to the very high statistical samples that are becoming available.  These measurements require accurate determination of B-meson lifetimes. The detector performance depends on the radiation damage it suffers during data-taking. Therefore, it is important to study the radiation effects on the detector parameters, such as leakage current and depletion voltage. These studies can help design better detectors for future experiments with higher precision. The ATLAS Pixel detector is being upgraded for the High Luminosity phase of the LHC, which will start in 2028. The new detector, called the Inner Tracker (ITk), is being developed and tested at IJCLab, France. This talk will show preliminary results of CPV and B-meson lifetime measurements, the results of radiation damage simulation using the Hamburg Model, and the quality assurance/control for the ITk Pixel detector. This talk also serves as the PhD annual update talk.
