Cosmology at the forefront of new physics

Friday November 17, 2023
3:30 pm

Presenter:  Prof. Savvas Koushiappas (Brown University)
 Series:  Physics and Astronomy Colloquium
Abstract:  In the last 25 years cosmology has been at the forefront of new physics. Evidence for dark matter and dark energy is well established, the cosmic microwave background has provided a wealth of information, and deep surveys have mapped the distribution and growth of structure in the universe. However, these great advancements uncovered new problems that point to physics beyond our current understanding. Dark matter is still elusive, dark energy is still not understood, and more recently the dynamics of the expansion of the universe and the growth of structure are not in agreement with what we expect. In this colloquium I will review the current status of cosmology and astro-particle physics, and provide some insight into the current problems and possible solutions.
