Theory and experiment for precise neutrino physics

Tuesday September 5, 2023
2:00 pm

 Presenter:  Oleksandr Tomalak (LANL)
Series:  Nuclear, Particle, Astroparticle and Cosmology (NUPAC) Seminars
Abstract:  Forthcoming neutrino oscillation experiments LBNF/DUNE (USA) and Hyper-Kamiokande (Japan) will discover or rule out charge-parity violation in the lepton sector and determine the ordering of neutrino masses. To achieve these goals, precise electron-neutrino appearance and muon-neutrino disappearance rates are compared to corresponding rates with antineutrinos. Extracting the oscillation parameters from these data requires accurate knowledge of scattering cross sections and incoming (anti)neutrino fluxes. In this talk, I will describe a few recent calculations of radiative corrections and scattering cross sections to neutrino- and electron-induced reactions. e.g. elastic neutrino-electron scattering and inverse muon decay. I will motivate and formulate radiative corrections to charged-current elastic (anti)neutrino-nucleon scattering and validate the precise relation between electron and muon flavor cross sections for signal events in neutrino oscillation experiments. I will illustrate a new permille-to-percent level effect on (anti)neutrino- and electron-nucleus scattering due to the exchange of photons with a nuclear medium.
