Persistent Trains and Meteor Radio Afterglows in All Sky Images

Monday November 21, 2022
10:00 am

 Presenter:  Logan Cordonnier (UNM)
Series:  Center for Astrophysics Research and Technologies Seminar Series
Abstract:  I will present the statistics of optical persistent trains (PTs) and their relationship to meteor radio afterglows (MRAs). Both of these phenomena are thought to be associated with meteor trail chemistry in the upper atmosphere. Using a pipeline I developed, PTs were extracted from all sky images taken by a widefield camera currently deployed at Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge. From there, I cross-checked these PTs in a database of detected meteors to find their associated parameters. In addition, a transient finder pipeline can be used to find MRAs in Long Wavelength Array data. It was found that the PTs observed in this study had characteristics which appear contrary to those reported in previous literature, casting doubts on the popular assumptions made about these phenomena. Additional work is ongoing to improve the PT detection pipeline as well as to compare the PTs to the detected MRAs.
