Severe Thunderstorms and Tornadoes -- Understanding Them and Staying Safe

Thursday October 19, 2017
5:00 pm

 Presenter:  Gregory S. Forbes
The Weather Channel
Atlanta GA.
 Series:  Sigma Xi Public Talk
Abstract:  Much has been learned about severe thunderstorms and tornadoes in recent decades, but much is still unknown. The talk explains how general areas favorable for severe thunderstorms and tornadoes can be predicted. It talks about how thunderstorms develop lightning, hail, and damaging winds. It explores what we understand about tornado formation, but why the false alarm rate remains rather high for tornado warnings. It reveals that we have limited ability to predict individual tornado intensity. Safety measures are discussed.
 Host:  Harjit Ahluwalia
Location:  Room C, UNM Conference Center
