Structured matter for exotic light control

 Series:  Physics and Astronomy Colloquium
Abstract:  Light is ubiquitous in modern technologies. This stresses the need to tailor the behavior of light beyond what natural materials offer. Judicious sculpturing of matter can unleash a range of exotic light phenomena by exploiting a carefully balanced synergy between optical responses of materials and their geometry. The characteristic size scale of these "meta-structures," which can range from much smaller to similar to the wavelength of the impinging light, is critical in determining the system's photonic response. Here I discuss my work with a variety of metaphotonic systems that can demonstrate an effective negative refractive index, artificial magnetism, slow light, non-resonant electric field enhancement and confinement, as well as perfect absorption with perfect reflectors. These extra-ordinary capabilities can find applications in microscopy, imaging, sensing, detection, non-classical light sources and all-optical circuitry.
