Cross-Section Measurements of Proton-Induced Delayed Neutrons at 800 MeV

Tuesday March 24, 2015
2:00 pm

 Presenter:  Randy Spaulding, UNM
Series:  Nuclear, Particle, Astroparticle and Cosmology (NUPAC) Seminars
Abstract:  The need to deter nuclear terrorism has prompted the development of many novel techniques for identifying nuclear materials. One of these applications--maritime high-energy active interrogation via delayed neutrons--was developed at the LANSCe facility at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) from 2008-2010. The necessary signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is on the order of 10^7, which can be difficult to achieve due to the significant induced background. Thus, modeling efforts require accurate measurement of delayed neutron backgrounds induced from materials found in the maritime environment. These measurements are further complicated by the time-dependent energy of the delayed neutron signal. Techniques for overcoming these obstacles and results from preliminary data analysis are presented here.
