Cosmic-ray Questions: Where do the ultra-high energy particles come from?

| Abstract: | In 1963, John Linsley published the first observational evidence for a particle with energy above 10^20 eV. Fifty years later the question of where the ultra-high energy cosmic-rays (UHECR) originate is still mysterious. For example, there is no decisive evidence that constrains the sources to be extra-galactic (or constrains the sources to be galactic). In this talk, I will review much of the current experimental evidence with regard to UHECR. I will concentrate on the directionality of the UHECR as these measurements probably have the best chance of moving the field substantially forward in the near future. I will also review our knowledge of the galactic magnetic field that is relevant to UHECR propagation. I will discuss how our current knowledge constrains our ideas for the origin of UHECR with the hope of elucidating the key problems to be attacked by the next series of observatories. | |
