Finding the Spin of the Proton

Tuesday October 29, 2013
3:30 pm

 Presenter:  Dr. Douglas E. Fields
Abstract:  While the naïve model of hadrons (bound massive quarks) is rather straightforward and explains many aspects of protons, neutrons, etc., their complexity at smaller scales has delivered some surprises.  As is the way in the study of nature, both experiment and theory have alternatively lead the way into a better understanding of this complexity and the emergent phenomena in which it is made manifest.  I will describe how the experimental program at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) has made progress in this understanding, and highlight a few questions that remain to be answered.
 Location:  PAIS-2540, PAIS
