How does nuclear structure affect the interpretation of direct Dark Matter searches?

Tuesday October 22, 2013
2:00 pm

 Presenter:  Gerard Stephenson (UNM)
Series:  Nuclear, Particle, Astroparticle and Cosmology (NUPAC) Seminars
Abstract:  At a symposium at the University of Washington on September 7 Wick Haxton, now at Berkeley, gave a talk advertising work with Anand and Fitzpatrick (ArXiv 1308.6288) in which they use Effective Field Theory techniques to work out the response functions for nuclear targets for WIMP detection in terms of model independent density functions. In the talk, Haxton suggested that the differences in targets might resolve disparities among experimental results, although with no specific examples. I shall give a journal club type summary of the paper and we can discuss the relevance for experiments in which UNM is involved.
