Conditional quantum logic with single photons: several approaches that won't work, and one that might

Thursday September 19, 2013
3:30 pm

Presenter:  Julio Gea-Banacloche, University of Arkansas
 Series:  CQuIC Seminars
Abstract:  Although photons are in some ways ideal carriers of quantum information, and single-qubit quantum logical gates on photons are rather straightforward, the lack of direct photon-photon interactions makes conditional logic with single photons a highly nontrivial problem. I will discuss why proposals based on Kerr-like dispersive interactions will probably not work, and review a proposal based on an absorptive interaction (mediated by a three-level atom in a cavity) that, although technically very challenging, seems theoretically feasible
