Abstract: |
The vast majority of the mass is the universe is dark and non-baryonic. However, we don't know the composition of the dark matter. The most popular candidate for the dark matter is Weakly Interacting Massive Particles. I'll describe the motivation for WIMPs, the fundamentals WIMP detection, overview the field of WIMP-detection, and then focus on the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search. CDMS attempts to observe WIMP-induced nuclear recoils using Ge crystals with phonon and ionization sensors with thresholds as low as a few keV.
