Title: Quantum control of qubits and qudits in neutral atom systems

Abstract: This talk presents the research conducted over the past four years under the advisorship of Prof. Ivan Deutsch. We begin with an introduction to neutral atom quantum systems, how they work and what distinguishes them from other quantum computing platforms. From there, we outline several outstanding open problems that motivate our work, and present the four key results that make up this dissertation:

  1. A new design for entangling gates based on spin-flip blockade
  2. Mitigating atom loss using quantum circuit gadgets
  3. Laser-only control of qudits in nuclear spins of alkaline-earth atoms
  4. Quantum control of qudits encoded in symmetric pseudo-spins of ensembles of qubits

We conclude with a discussion of ongoing and future research directions, followed by acknowledgements.
