The Muon g-2 experiment at Fermilab

Presented by Prof. Rob Carey (Boston University)

In August 2023, the muon g-2 collaboration announced the results of a second, 203 parts per billion measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, based on data taken at Fermilab between 2019 and 2021. The new result is consistent with the first result from Fermilab (April 2021) and that from the Brookhaven experiment (1997-2004). I will first describe the history of the measurement and its importance to the development of the Standard Model of elementary particle physics. That will include a brief status report on the theoretical prediction, which remains unsettled. I will then explain how the measurement is made and highlight a few of the systematic errors that must be overcome. I will conclude with a brief status report on our final result, which is expected in 2025.
