How to construct a quantum computer

Presented by Kenneth Brown, Duke University

Quantum computers promise to revolutionize the way that we do computational physics. We expect that future quantum computers will help us improve our calculations of molecules, strongly-coupled electrons, and interacting fields. In the present, current devices have limited reliability and we are at present not able to compete with classical computation. In this talk, I will first explain how quantum simulations are mapped to quantum computers and how this this mapping fixes the required reliability. I will then discuss paths for generating reliable devices using a combination of quantum control and quantum error correction. I will conclude with comments about the current state of experimental devices.
