Energy Storage and Modernization of the Electric Grid

Presented by Babu Chalamala Manager of Grid Energy Storage Sandia National Laboratories

We are on the verge of a major transformation in electricity infrastructure over the next ten to twenty years. This is driven by the need to modernize an aging grid, make the grid resilient, and integrate distributed generation on a large scale. As we transition towards a greater role for renewables and distributed generation, addressing intermittency is becoming critical. Large scale integration of energy storage is a key component of the grid modernization. I will present trends and future of grid modernization and the role of energy storage, discuss gaps in technology and implementation of energy storage, and present an overview of current research in batteries and grid energy storage technologies.
