6:30 pm  Title:  Altering nature with gene drives: We can. But should we?
 Presenter:  James P. Collins is Virginia M. Ullman Professor of Natural History and the Environment at Arizona State University. He studies host-pathogen biology and its relationship to the decline and extinction of species, the intellectual and institutional factors that have shaped Ecology's development as a discipline, as well as Ecological Ethics. Professor Collins is the author of numerous peer reviewed papers and book chapters, and is co-author with Dr. Martha Crump of Extinction in Our Times: Global Amphibian Decline (Oxford University Press). Dr. Collins served as chair of the Board on Life Sciences of the US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine; Chair of the Board of the American Association of Colleges & Universities; and President of the American Institute of Biological Sciences. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a Fellow of the Association for Women in Science, and an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

 Presenter:  Dr Elkins-Tanton, Arizona State University

Lindy Elkins-Tanton, recipient of the 2020 Arthur L. Day Prize and Lectureship, is the lead of the NASA Psyche mission; Arizona State University Vice President of the Interplanetary Initiative; and co-founder of Beagle Learning, a tech company training and measuring collaborative problem-solving and critical thinking. Her research concerns terrestrial planetary evolution.

Elkins-Tanton received her academic degrees from MIT.

She worked at Brown University, MIT, and the Carnegie Institution for Science before moving to Arizona State University.

Asteroid (8252) Elkins-Tanton is named for her.

She is a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, and in 2022 William Morrow published her memoir, A Portrait of the Scientist as a Young Woman.

 Presenter:  Joydeep Mitra, Michigan State University

Joydeep Mitra (Ph.D., FIEEE) is Professor of Electrical Engineering at Michigan State University, East Lansing, Director of the Energy Reliability & Security (ERiSe) Laboratory, and Senior Faculty Associate at the Institute of Public Utilities. Prof. Mitra is known for his contributions to power system reliability analysis and reliability-based planning. He has over 250 publications and patents in the power systems area; he is co-author of the book, "Electric Power Grid Reliability Evaluation: Models and Methods," and of IEEE Standard 762, a standard on reliability reporting. He is recipient of the 2019 IEEE-PES Roy Billinton Power System Reliability Award and the 2020 PMAPS Merit Award. Prof. Mitra serves as Chair of the IEEE PES Fellow Evaluation Committee and as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications. In the past he has served as Chair of the IEEE-PES Analytic Methods for Power Systems Committee, Chair of several IEEE-PES Subcommittees, and as an Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Power Systems and Power Engineering Letters, and for the IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid. Prof. Mitra is a Fellow of the IEEE and an IEEE-PES Distinguished Lecturer.

 Presenter:  Denis Seletskiy is an Associate Professor of Engineering Physics and a holder of Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in "Ultrafast and Quantum Photonics" at Polytechnique Montreal. He received his PhD from the Optical Sciences and Engineering program at the University of New Mexico in 2010, followed by a National Research Council postdoctoral fellowship at Air Force Research Laboratories (2010-2012) and a 5-year junior group leader position and Marie Curie Zukuntskolleg Research fellowship at the University of Konstanz, Germany. In 2017 Seletskiy established the femtoQ laboratory at Polytechnique, which is focused on advancing theory, laser technology, and metrology protocols for time-domain quantum photonics. Since October 2022, he is leading an EU-CAN consortium in Mid-Infrared Quantum Technologies for Sensing (MIRAQLS).

 Presenter:  Laurie McNeil is the Bernard Gray Distinguished Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

She earned an A.B. in Chemistry and Physics from Radcliffe College, Harvard University, and a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

After two years as an IBM Postdoctoral Fellow at MIT she joined the faculty at UNC-CH in 1984.

She serves as a Deputy Editor at the Journal of Applied Physics.

Prof. McNeil is a materials physicist who uses optical spectroscopy to investigate the properties of semiconductors and insulators.

She is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and has worked throughout her career to enhance the representation and success of women in physics. Together with a colleague in the Department of Music at UNC-CH she teaches a course on the physics of musical instruments.
