Neutrinos from Charm: a Forward Physics Facility at the LHC and Atmospheric Neutrinos

Tuesday February 21, 2023
2:00 pm

Presenter:  Mary Hall Reno (University of Iowa)
Series:  Nuclear, Particle, Astroparticle and Cosmology (NUPAC) Seminars
Abstract:  The prompt atmospheric neutrino flux comes from charm hadron production and decay to neutrinos. There are large theoretical uncertainties in the evaluation of charm production in hadron collisions. The proposed Forward Physics Facility (FPF) will have 10-tonne-scale experiments that will be designed to detect ~105 νe, ~106 νμ, and ∼103 ντ interactions with neutrinos in the few hundred GeV to TeV energy range. Charm particle production and decay to neutrinos dominates the ντ flux and most of the high energy νμ and νe flux at the FPF. In this talk, the theoretical uncertainties in the neutrino flux predictions from charm at the FPF will be discussed. Connections between FPF neutrinos and the high energy atmospheric neutrino flux from charm will be described.abmool
