Transient Phenomena in Surveys of the Cosmic Microwave Background

Tuesday April 19, 2022
2:00 pm

 Presenter:  Ian Birdwell, UNM
Series:  Nuclear, Particle, Astroparticle and Cosmology (NUPAC) Seminars
Abstract:  The Stage 4 Cosmic Microwave Background survey (CMB-S4) is expected to utilize over 500,000 sensors to advance our understanding of cosmology and particle physics, probing sub-nanokelvin variations in the CMB. The rapid increase in scale of CMB experiments has enabled observations of transient astrophysical phenomena, from stellar flares to gravitational wave events. This talk will explore the timeline of CMB experiment sensitivity, efforts in transient detections thus far, and the steps necessary to profile atmospheric noise and radio interference sufficiently to enable this next step in multi-messenger astrophysics.
 Host:  Darcy Barron
 Location:  PAIS-3205, PAIS
