Description of the class


This class is the third part of the three-semester sequence of calculus-based physics for scientists and engineers. In it, we cover mechanical waves, electromagnetic waves, special relativity and introductory quantum mechanics. This is a three credit-hour course. Class meets for three 50-minute sessions of direct instruction for fifteen weeks during the Fall 2023 semester. Please plan for a minimum of six hours of out-of-class work (or homework, study, assignment completion, and class preparation) each week.


Class Times and Lectures

Monday, Wednsday and Friday, 12:00 - 12:50, PAIS 1100. Videos of all of the lectures are posted below. You are required to watch these lectures BEFORE CLASS, and there will be clicker questions on them at the beginning of class. Be aware, time sensitive material in the recorded lectures should be ignored.

Young and Friedman, University Physics, 14th Edition, Pierson, Addison, Wesley.

You will also need Mastering Physics access (Course ID = fields89249).

Grading

The grading in the course will be based on your performance in mastering physics homework, in-class clicker quizzes, four midterm exams and a final exam. The maximum grade will be 100 points, with the following distribution:

  1. Mastering Physics Homework: the best (n-1) scores of the n assignments will represent 10 percent of the final grade.
  2. In-Class iClicker quizzes: the best (n-1) scores of the n sessions will represent 10 percent of the final grade.
  3. Midterm exams: the average of the best 3/4 will represent 50 percent of the final grade.
  4. Final exam: will represent 30 percent of the final grade.

You will need access to MasteringPhysics The class code for MasteringPhysics is fields89249. Homework is due by class start on the day shown below. Late assignments are reduced by 5 percent per hour.
