Flavor Instabilities and Collective Neutrino Oscillations

Copious neutrinos are emitted during a core-collapse supernova or a binary neutron star merger. They play critical roles in the nucleosynthesis and even the dynamic evolution of the compact object environment. The dense neutrino gas in such an environment can become unstable against flavor transformation and engenders flavor oscillation waves that transport electron lepton numbers. Two types of flavor instabilities will be discussed in details in this talk. One is the so called “fast” flavor instability which seems to be independent of the neutrino masses. The other is the collisional flavor instability which is triggered by the charged-current neutrino “collisions”.
