Early Matter Domination from Long-Lived Particles in the Visible Sector

Thermal history of the universe within the first second is unprobed by observations. Nonstandard histories with epochs of early matter domination have attracted significant attention in recent years. I discuss a scenario where a sub-TeV visible sector particle, arising in minimal extensions of the Standard Model, can lead to early matter domination. Such a long-lived particle acquires a thermal abundance from decays and inverse decays in the thermal bath, and subsequently dominates the energy density of the universe. This scenario can accommodate the correct dark matter relic abundance, and its parameter space can be directly probed by proposed searches for neutral long-lived particles at the energy frontier. This allows us to use particle physics experiments to reconstruct the cosmological history just prior to big bang nucleosynthesis.
