Dynamical fermionization

I will describe experiments with one-dimensional (1D) Bose gases, made with ultracold atoms trapped in tubes made from light. Because the 1D Bose gases we study are "integrable" many-body systems, they have infinite sets of conserved quantities, unlike the usual few (energy, momentum, angular momentum) that are conserved in non-integrable systems. I will describe how we measure the never-before-measured extra conserved quantities. In the process we observe "dynamical fermionization", where the momentum distribution of a strongly interacting 1D Bose gas transforms into that of a non-interacting Fermi gas. We also observe the dramatic behavior of bosonic-fermionic oscillations, which are what they sound like. Prior knowledge of cold atom experiments and integrable many-body systems will not be necessary to follow this talk.
