Circuit quantum electrodynamics: State of the art, challenges and possibilities for the future

Circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) is a field where quantum properties of superconducting electronic circuits are explored and put to use. This is currently a leading approach for realizing quantum computers, using so-called superconducting quantum bits (qubits). But are superconducting qubits going to be good enough to build a useful, fault-tolerant quantum computer? In this talk I will introduce the field of cQED and superconducting qubits, argue that we still have a long way to go before practical quantum computers can be a reality, and talk about some of my own ongoing work on possible approaches for going beyond the current state-of-the-art. One approach is based on exploiting the multi-level nature of superconducting circuits to encode quantum information more robustly, and one approach is based on using topological superconductors to realize so-called Majorana qubits.
