Symmetry and Emergence

Presented by Group Discussion

We will discuss the paper "Symmetry and Emergence" (e-Print: arXiv:1710.01791 [hep-th]) by E. Witten that appeared recently. It discusses how in a modern understanding, global symmetries are approximate and gauge symmetries may be emergent. It is based on Witten's lecture at the April, 2016 meeting of the American Physical Society in Salt Lake City, Utah.
