Game of Light and Heat

Presented by Dr. Mansoor Sheik-Bahae, OSE General Chair and Distinguished Professor of Physics and Astronomy, UNM

This talk concerns the manipulation of temperature in matter using coherent laser light. After introducing the general concepts, I present our most recent progress on solid-state laser cooling that has led to the development of the world's first solid-state cryocooler at UNM. Next, the extension of this concept in realizing 'thermal' lasers or lasers that do not produce any heat or even self-cool will be presented. Finally, laser cooling, and thermal management in semiconductors and semiconductor disk lasers will be discussed.
