The BAaDE Project and Flux Biases between 43 and 86 GHz SiO Masers

Presented by Michael Stroh, UNM

While there is an impressive array of evidence for the bar in the central kiloparsec of the Milky Way, we still have an incomplete description of how the bar relates to the thin disk and central nucleus. In part, this is due to the extremely high extinction toward the plane. Current optical and infrared campaigns are not able to pierce through the dust at low Galactic latitudes and, to a great extent, these optical/IR surveys have begun to reach impasses that cannot be easily resolved with increases in their sample size.

The Bulge Asymmetries and Dynamic Evolution (BAaDE) project aims to resolve this impasse by obtaining dynamical information in the unobscured radio regime. The SiO maser at 43 (or 86) GHz is easily observed with VLA (or ALMA) and the BAaDE project aims to construct a database of about 20,000 SiO maser detections out of a sample of 32,000 infrared stars with accurate velocities and positions. In this talk I introduce the BAaDE project, give a status update on the project, and lastly discuss some of our current results regarding flux biases between the 43 and 86 GHz SiO masers.
