Nanofibers and atoms: A new platform for quantum optics

Presented by Luis Orozco, UMD

This introduction to the optics of nanofibers stresses the propagation of modes, and will give a progress report on our understanding of Rbatoms near nanofibers. I will show: 1) the modification of the lifetime of the D2line in the presence of the nanofiber and its relation to the single atom coupling 2) temperature measurements from the temporal dependence of the fluorescence correlation into the mode of the nanofiber 3) trapping of Rb atoms in the evanescent field around an optical nanofiber, and 4) the dynamical behavior observed by probing the birefringence of the trapped atom-nanofibersystem.
