Encoding many qubits in the orbital angular momentum of light

Presented by Phillippe Raynal, National University of Singapore

We propose a scheme for encoding many qubits in the Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) of light. A key feature of this scheme is its ability to manipulate and entangle the encoded qubit subsystems with a single operation on the OAM. We also show, using quantum error-correcting codes, how to protect the qubits against small errors in angular position and momentum which may affect the OAM. The proposed scheme is immediately generalizable to qudits of any dimension and can be implemented in other systems with a quantized angular momentum along a single axis.
