Hydrodynamics and polymer diffusion in lipid membranes

Protein diffusion in lipid membranes is an area of study that has attracted significant interest ever since Saffman and Delbruck wrote a seminal paper on it in 1975. One reason for the continued interest is due to the nontrivial hydrodynamics of the lipid bilayer, because of which the diffusion constant of inclusions scales differently depending on whether its size is smaller or larger than a hydrodynamic screening length. In this talk I will discuss the diffusion of polymers on supported lipid bilayers, or crowded lipid bilayers, using a phenomenological approach, concentrating especially on incorporating self-avoidance in the Zimm model. I will discuss the various length scales that govern the scaling of the diffusion constant. I will also discuss the properties of the hydrodynamics of moving inclusions in lipid membranes.
