The W Boson Mass and the Standard Model of Particle Physics

Friday August 26, 2022
3:30 pm

 Presenter:  Ashutosh Kotwal, Duke University
 Series:  Physics and Astronomy Colloquium
Abstract:  The Standard Model Theory has been a crowning achievement of fundamental physics, culminating in the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012. As the theory of the building blocks of matter and forces at the quantum level, it has been one of the most successful theories in science. The recent measurement of the W boson mass disagrees with the Standard Model. This upset to the Standard Model may point towards exciting new discoveries in particle physics for years to come. We will discuss the Standard Model, the crucial role of the W boson and its sensitivity to new laws of nature, and the high-precision measurement of its mass at the CDFII experiment at Fermilab.
