Quantum algorithms for thermal state preparation using fluctuation theorems

Thursday May 12, 2022
3:30 pm

 Presenter:  Gopikrishnan Muraleedharan (LANL)
 Series:  CQuIC Seminars
Abstract:  Fluctuation theorems provide a correspondence between properties of quantum systems in thermal equilibrium and a work distribution arising in a non-equilibrium process that connects two quantum systems. In this talk, I will describe a quantum algorithm we recently developed to prepare the thermal state (purification) of a target Hamiltonian H1, from the thermal state of initial Hamiltonian H0. The complexity of the algorithm is exponential in the norm of perturbation rather than the norm of the Hamiltonian like in previous works. This results in a huge improvement when the perturbation is small. I will also discuss the dependence of complexity on other parameters like precision.

The preprint for the work discussed can be found at arXiv:2203.08882.
