Abstract: | Phase transitions are central for the understanding and characterization of equilibrium many-body systems. They separate different phases of matter and are therefore associated with singular behavior in the system's macroscopic properties upon varying an external control parameter such as temperature. Within the last decade it has been realized that singular behavior can also occur during nonequilibrium quantum real-time evolution with physical quantities becoming nonanalytic as a function of time. These dynamical quantum phase transitions will be the central focus of this presentation. I will aim at a pedagogical introduction summarizing both theoretical and experimental developments as well as pointing out the remaining challenges, open questions, and directions for future research | |
