Beyond Conventional Quantum Adiabatic Optimization

 Abstract:  Quantum adiabatic optimization is a heuristic quantum algorithm for solving classical optimization problems. The algorithm uses an interpolating Hamiltonian to enact the computation, and the evolution is taken to be adiabatic in order to guarantee that the solution to the optimization problem is found with high probability. While having few requirements on the form of the Hamiltonian, most studies on the performance of the algorithm have been restricted to simple interpolations between two non-commuting Hamiltonians. We present results on some of the exciting things that can happen when we free ourselves of the restriction of adiabaticity or simple interpolations in the hope of finding demonstrable quantum advantages for solving optimization problems.
