Quantum error correction beyond the depolarizing error model

 Abstract:  The performance of encoded logical qubits depends strongly on the choice of quantum error correction code, the underlying physical error model, and the quantum and classical circuits that determine the errors. In this presentation, I will focus on the interplay between the code and the physical error model. First, I will discuss our work simulating the performance of [[9,1,3]] compass codes under a trapped ion error model that includes anisotropic Pauli errors and crosstalk (arXiv:1910.08495 ). Then I will describe our work on cluster state fault-tolerance that enables us to generate different crystals that are better suited for X type or Z type errors (arXiv:1909.11817). I will conclude with a discussion of further opportunities for designing codes that are constructed for specific device errors.
