The primary resource for quantum computing is Hilbert space dimension both for executing quantum algorithms and, even more so, for error correction designed to mitigate physical noise that can corrupt the encoded information. The typical place to find this Hilbert space is in the tensor product of many qubits, but there exists an alternative: the quantum harmonic oscillator. I will discuss quantum computing and error correction using a qubit encoded into a single harmonic oscillator mode. I will take the pedagogical approach and introduce and compare several types of encoding, review recent experimental breakthroughs, and discuss ongoing work on a general framework we call "modular qubits." |
