Cosmic Dawn

Thursday March 22, 2018
2:00 pm

Presenter:  Greg Taylor and Rouzbeh Allahverdi (UNM)
Series:  Center for Astrophysics Research and Technologies Seminar Series
Abstract:  The recent discovery of a broad and strong absorption signal at 78 MHz by Bowman and collaborators has enormous potential for understanding the formation of the first stars and galaxies. This "cosmic dawn" signal of hydrogen in absorption between redshifts of 15 and 20 has been predicted but never before observed. We will give a brief description of the EDGES experiment that made the initial discovery, and talk about some of the experiments, including our own efforts with the LWA, to confirm this amazing result. We will further speculate on some of the physics implied by the surprising depth and shape of the absorption feature.
 Location:  PAIS-2540, PAIS
