The Integration of Ultracold Atoms and Nanophotonics

Thursday May 3, 2018

 Presenter:  Jeff Kimble, CalTech
 Series:  CQuIC Seminars
Abstract:  Due to their small optical loss and tight field confinement, nanoscale dielectric devices are capable of mediating strong atom-light interactions. For example, atomic transitions near the band edge of a photonic crystal waveguide (PCW) provide a unique platform for generating tunable range coherent atom-atom interactions that are mediated by guided-mode photons. Because of the evanescent nature of fields in the band gap, dissipation into the structure is suppressed exponentially. To describe such phenomena, a formalism beyond traditional quantum optics is required in terms of the Green's functions for the nano-photonic structures.
