New Results on the Galactic Bulge: A Complex Stellar Population

Thursday November 30, 2017
2:00 pm

 Presenter:  Michael Rich, UCLA
Series:  Center for Astrophysics Research and Technologies Seminar Series
Abstract:  The central bulge of the Milky Way has been studied since the 1940s, yet continues to attract new observations and spawn controversy.  I will address a brief history of the subject, discuss a new class of iron-complex bulge globular clusters, the composition of the field stars, and address the as yet unresolved controversy concerning the age of the bulge.  I will also present new results on the dynamics of SiO masers in the bulge, from the Bulge Asymmetries and Dynamical Evolution project, and also discuss a new LSST pathfinder survey of the bulge.
 Host:  Ylva Pihlström
 Location:  PAIS-2540, PAIS
