Scrambling Quantum Information in Cold Atoms with Light

Abstract: | Coupling many atoms to a single mode of light offers an efficient means of spreading quantum information across an extended many-body system. In ongoing experiments, we are harnessing photons in an optical cavity to mediate flip-flop interactions among distant spins in a cloud of rubidium atoms. Such interactions can enable quantum simulations of exotic Hamiltonians featuring non-local hopping of strongly interacting bosons, offering intriguing analogies with models for fast scrambling of quantum information in black holes. I will discuss prospects for quantum simulations exploring this connection to many-body chaos and gauge/gravity duality. | |
