Optics in minuscule and MAJUSCULE

Thursday November 16, 2017
11:00 am

Presenter:  Professor Jean Claude Diels, UNM Physics and Astronomy and Electrical and Computer Engineering departments
 Series:  OSE Seminars
Abstract:  It is sometimes taken as granted that the temporal and spatial resolution that can be achieved with light is limited to the optical cycle or the light period, respectively. The accuracy with which the optical field can be synchronized and manipulated has made it possible to reach the attosecond time scale. We are thriving to achieve the spatial equivalent of that temporal resolution. We have demonstrated methods to resolve optically periodic changes in optical path of femtometer. Our goal is to miniaturize the minuscule" down to the attometer.

At the majuscule end of the scale, we are trying to expand our (optical) horizon to the km scale. The goal is to perform ultra-high resolution spectroscopy at distances of tens of km
Location:  Room 103, Center for High Tech Materials
