Physics of magma bodies and volcanoes

 Series:  Physics and Astronomy Colloquium
 Abstract:  I shall give an overview of planetary-scale plate tectonics and review what we know about magma sources and chemical differentiation in Earth. Although we know that magma is generated by partial melting of rocks at depth, we have less of an understanding of the processes that transport magma from great depths (>100-150 km) into the shallower (30-0 km) crustal plumbing systems of volcanic zones. Interstitial melt must first migrate via percolative flow and eventually become focused and reorganized into networks and channels. Field and geochemical observations suggest that these networks are characterized by thermal and chemical disequilibrium between the melt and surrounding rock. New developments in volcano science have led to shifting paradigms on magma transport and storage in the crust. I shall discuss these ideas and highlight efforts at UNM aimed at improving volcano monitoring using subsurface density structure. Finally, I shall discuss some ideas for understanding the rheology of magma as a particle suspension, where the volume fraction of particles changes as magma cools and partially crystallizes within the crust. Throughout the talk, I shall highlight open questions that physicists might help solve.
