Engineering Entanglement for Quantum Metrology

Friday January 19, 2018
3:30 pm

 Presenter:  Monika Schleier-Smith, Stanford University
 Series:  Physics and Astronomy Colloquium
Abstract:  The past few years have brought dramatic advances in the ability to engineer many-particle entangled states enabling the operation of quantum-enhanced clocks and sensors. Still, pushing these devices to their fundamental quantum limits remains a daunting challenge. Two formidable adversaries in this quest are noise and dissipation. I will describe strategies for minimizing their detrimental impact to approach the Heisenberg limit, focusing on progress and prospects in experiments with ensembles of cold atoms that “talk” to each other via the light field in an optical resonator.
 Host:  Ivan Deutsch
Location:  Room 125, Dane Smith Hall

Refreshments will be available before the colloquium, at 03:15 pm, in in the lobby of Dane Smith Hall.
