Paleomagnetism Studies with Nitrogen-Vacancy Defect Centers in Diamond

Thursday March 23, 2017
11:00 am

Presenter:  Dr. Pauli Kehayias, postdoctoral researcher working with Dr. Ronald Walsworth, Harvard University
 Series:  OSE Seminars
Abstract:  Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color centers in diamond have generated much recent attention for magnetometry applications. NV centers work at ambient conditions and can be placed close to the diamond surface, allowing a small sample-sensor separation and high spatial resolution. I will discuss ongoing work on using ensembles of near-surface NVs for magnetic microscopy, where we image magnetic grains in rock samples for paleomagnetism studies. The micron-scale spatial resolution enables us to spatially distinguish between different ferromagnetic minerals and isolate high-coercivity magnetic inclusions from possible contamination. In addition to presenting continuing sensitivity and instrumentation improvements, I will describe ongoing paleomagnetism measurements, including constraining the magnetic field strength of the early Earth and assessing whether meteorite parent bodies had magnetic dynamo activity.
