Non-thermal Dark Matter

Tuesday December 6, 2016
2:00 pm

 Presenter:  Jacek Osinski, UNM
Series:  Nuclear, Particle, Astroparticle and Cosmology (NUPAC) Seminars
Abstract:  Event Abstract: Traditional models of dark matter (DM) production follow the WIMP paradigm of thermal freeze-out in a radiation dominated era before 1 sec - the beginning of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN). However, these models require the DM annihilation cross-section to be a very specific value in order to reproduce the current observed DM abundance. Non-thermal production mechanisms can accommodate a wide range of cross-sections while maintaining standard BBN and are therefore more flexible options as observational constraints become more stringent. I will discuss such mechanisms in the context of an Early Matter Dominated Era (EMDE) caused by a massive scalar field.
