Photochromic Ruthenium Compounds: Photophysics, Photorefraction, and Photonastism

Thursday September 22, 2016
11:00 am

Presenter:  Dr. Jeffrey Rack, UNM Chemistry and Chemical Biology
 Series:  OSE Seminars
Abstract:  Our group's primary focus is the development of new inorganic photochromic compounds. The mode of action in these compounds is an excited state isomerization of a bound ligand. We have employed ultrafast pump probe spectroscopy to reveal that these bond breaking and bond making reactions can occur on a picosecond timescale, ranging from 45 ps to 2 ns. The reaction may also be efficient with quantum yields for isomerization as high as 0.9 for certain complexes and 10-3 for the most inefficient complexes. We have incorporated certain of these complexes within materials for one of two applications: direct conversion of light energy to mechanical energy, and the development of new photorefractive materials. In the first application, we have discovered new materials that undergo rapid macroscopic shape change following irradiation. We have also created new materials that exhibit a change in the refractive index of the material upon irradiation. These three areas will be discussed in the lecture.
